ED 7716 - Global Literacy in the 21st Century

Part of the IT&DML Program at the University of New Haven. Students develop global competence as educators, evaluate global literacy programs and resources, and design interdisciplinary lesson plans incorporating global literacy for K-12 classrooms.


Course Description

This course addresses global competence and literacy in the context of K-12 American education. Students develop their globally connected educator practice through participatory networks and learning, evaluate global literacy programs and resources for classroom implementation, and create interdisciplinary lesson and unit plans that incorporate global literacy elements. The course draws on 21st century skills frameworks and authentic global learning projects to help educators understand and engage an interconnected world.


Learning Objectives

  1. Understand and evaluate global competence and literacy in relation to K-12 American education.
  2. Develop a globally connected educator practice through participatory networks and connected learning.
  3. Identify and evaluate global literacy programs and resources for classroom implementation.
  4. Create interdisciplinary lesson and unit plans incorporating global literacy elements aligned with Common Core and Connecticut standards.

Assignments

  1. Weekly Discussions (25%) — Contribute at least one post per discussion plus two constructive comments driving the discussion forward. Includes participation in the #walkmyworld Twitter and Google+ project.

  2. Attendance and Reflection (30%) — Active participation in class, including attendance at a guest lecture by Pedro Noguera. Prepared to join discussions and respond reflectively on topic and assigned material.

  3. Micro-Talks (15%) — Individual or paired presentation on a topic from a provided list or by mutual agreement. Followed by a written self-reflection sent to the instructor the following week.

  4. Lesson/Unit Plan Based on Common Core of Teaching (30%) — Incorporate topics or resources from the course into a current teaching assignment. Assessed on planning and reflection (not actual teaching). Evaluated using the Connecticut Common Core of Teaching rubric.
