IT&DML Program
The Instructional Technologies and Digital Media Literacy (IT&DML) Sixth Year Certificate program at the University of New Haven was designed and built by W. Ian O'Byrne to prepare K-12 educators to embed digital literacy and instructional technology into their classrooms, take on teacher leadership roles, and develop school or district-level professional development.
Program Overview
Program Description
The IT&DML program is a graduate-level Sixth Year Certificate (Program #827) at the University of New Haven's School of Education. The program prepares educators to:
- Develop and implement school or district-level professional development in instructional technologies and digital media literacy
- Consult with or work alongside Connecticut State Regional Alliance Centers
- Serve in positions of teacher leadership related to instructional technologies or digital media literacy
- Embed instructional technologies and digital media literacy into classroom instruction
The program takes a participatory, networked approach to learning — students build blogs, create digital portfolios, engage in open online courses, and develop real classroom resources as they study theory and research.
Program Learning Goals
Graduates of the IT&DML program demonstrate the ability to:
- Understand the definition and foundations of instructional technologies and their relationship to 21st century teaching and learning in K-12 schools
- Identify new media and technologies and plan for their use in K-12 curriculum
- Locate their own roles in supporting and shaping students' diverse literacy and technological practices
- Apply confidence and willingness to use instructional technologies and new media in professional practice
Program Outcomes
- Participatory Networks — Develop and utilize participatory networks in their students' and their own learning
- Global, Distance, and Critical Literacy — Work with colleagues to develop common understandings across literacy contexts
- Diverse Literacy Practices — Identify their own roles in supporting and shaping students' diverse literacy and technological practices
- Power and Technology — Analyze the shifting power relationships that accompany new technologies and literacy
- Adaptive Technologies — Identify and employ adaptive technologies for use in inclusive classrooms
