About Digitally Literate
Digitally Literate is Ian O'Byrne's newsletter and connected public notebook
about technology, literacy, education, and the ways digital systems shape
everyday life.
The newsletter began in 2015 as Too Long; Didn't Read. It has changed in name
and form over the years, but the central practice has stayed the same: read
widely, notice the connections, and share a useful account of what matters.
What I write about
The work often returns to artificial intelligence, digital literacy, learning,
privacy, identity, platforms, and the open web. I am especially interested in
what these systems ask of people: how we exercise judgment, how we care for one
another, and how we retain agency inside environments designed by others.
I do not treat digital literacy as a checklist of technical skills. It is an
ongoing practice of reading systems, questioning their assumptions, making
informed choices, and building better alternatives together.
Why the notebook is here
A weekly issue captures a moment. Some questions stretch across many issues
and need a more durable home. The public notebook gathers those threads into
Evergreens, Groves, and Forests so that an idea can become clearer without
losing the history of how it developed.
The notebook is curated from a larger private research vault. Only material
prepared for a public reader appears here.
