No literacy, no liberty: We are condemning our children to a future without hope

No literacy, no liberty: We are condemning our children to a future without hope | Opinion (Newsweek)

Democrats and Republicans should be ashamed of our recent education report card.

A good piece highlighting the recent 2017 National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) test scores. The authors indicate the abysmal performance of U.S. students, while indicating the following:

should leave all of us—Democrats and Republicans, wealthy or poor alike—ashamed of how we are condemning our children to a future of economic insecurity and social decay.

The piece then goes on to talk about the impact of this on fragile communities, and the school-to-prison pipeline that is strengthened.
The piece concludes by indicating that one of the authors of the op-ed, Newt Gingrich uses Duolingo to learn Italian.

The authors are listed at the bottom of the piece:

Gerard Robinson is the executive director of the Center for Advancing Opportunity, a Washington, D.C.-based research and education initiative created by a partnership with the Thurgood Marshall College Fund, the Charles Koch Foundation, and Koch Industries.
Newt Gingrich was speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1995 to 1999 and is a best-selling author. Follow him on Twitter @NewtGingrich. His latest book is the New York Times best seller Trump’s America: The Truth About Our Nation’s Great Comeback.
