Imagine you have a big, colorful sign in a crowded playground that everyone can see. That means you have good social media visibility!
Digging Deeper
Social media visibility is important for individuals and businesses to reach a wider audience, gain followers, and increase engagement. It involves factors like being mentioned by others, having posts shared or retweeted, and being actively engaged in conversations online. High visibility can lead to increased brand awareness, influence, and credibility in the digital world.
In addition to a user’s own activities, we can also observe how other users engage with them. In the first place, we can count how often they are mentioned by other users, in any form. This tells us something about how visible they are within the overall dataset and the issues or topics in the dataset.
We can also distinguish different types of visibility here. On Twitter, users may be @mentioned, which indicates that others are talking about them and engaging them in conversations. Furthermore, the user’s messages may be retweeted, showing that other users have found these messages noteworthy, for example, because they are informative, insightful, or funny, but perhaps also because they are misguided or offensive.
Comparing Social Media Activity and visibility
Comparing both activity and visibility is also valuable. We might expect that highly active users are more likely to be retweeted – after all, you can’t be retweeted by others unless you post something in the first place. If a user receives a great number of retweets without having posted many messages, this may indicate a greater level of impact than if a highly active user also gets a few retweets for their posts.
Similarly, we may see users who post comparatively few tweets receiving a substantial number of @mentions; this could mean that people are talking about them rather than with them. Alternatively, highly active users may rarely be mentioned by others; this could mark them as disruptive participants – even as spammers or trolls – who are making no useful contributions to the general conversation.
